news story The British Contact Lens Association has produced a new, generic leaflet to help contact lens wearers get the best from their lenses and wear them as comfortably and safely as possible.

‘Looking after contact lenses’ is an eight-page leaflet of common questions and answers on lens handling and hygiene, and the Dos and Don’ts of contact lens wear.

The new leaflet explains that contact lenses are a very popular and successful way of correcting vision, have many advantages and are easy to use. It highlights the importance of looking after lenses carefully and informs patients of the care procedures that are crucial to successful contact lens wear such as:

•    Wash and dry hands before touching lenses
•    Discard single-use lenses after each wear
•    Rub and rinse re-usable lenses with solution before and after each wear
•    Empty the lens storage case of solution after each use
•    Clean and air dry the lens case and replace it regularly
•    Use fresh solution each time the lenses are stored
•    Never use tap water to store, clean or rinse lenses or case
•    Check the eyes feel good, look good and see well each time lenses are worn
•    Only use the lenses and solution recommended by your practitioner

The leaflet also stresses the importance of regular check-ups and advises patients to consult their contact lens practitioner if they have any questions about their lenses.

BCLA President William Thomas said the leaflet was designed to supplement and reinforce advice given by practitioners. ‘Our latest patient leaflet provides clear, unbiased information, based on the latest thinking on contact lens care, to encourage patients to look after their eyes and contact lenses. It will be invaluable in promoting successful contact lens wear and reminding wearers of the importance of following the correct procedures.’

‘Looking after contact lenses’ is the second patient information leaflet from the BCLA. ‘Buying contact lenses’ explains the law relating to contact lens sale and supply and provides advice on precautions wearers should take when buying lenses.

Looking after contact lenses’ and ‘Buying contact lenses’ are available from the BCLA and at www.bcla.org.uk. Additional copies can be ordered for BCLA members to supply to patients. Contact Jane Kelly on 020 7580 6661 or email jkelly@bcla.org.uk for a sample copy or to place your order.
